The 17th WTTC Annual Summit Held in Bangkok, Thailand

Business Delegation Led by Executive President Wang Min’gang of China Chamber of Tourism Attended the Summit

 

On April 26th, 2017, World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC for short) Annual Summit was officially opened in Bangkok, Thailand. More than 500 industry leaders and elites such as Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, Secretary-general Taleb Rifai of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, and former British Prime Minister Cameron gathered in Bangkok, the City Of Angels, to conduct one-and-a-half-day in-depth discussion on two themes, namely “Changing Our World” and “Sustainable Development of World Tourism”. Invited by WTTC, Executive President Wang Min’gang of China Chamber of Tourism led a business delegation consisting ten delegates, including Vice President He Chaoqiong, Chairman Li Xiaomei of the Board of Mekong River Tourism Co., Ltd, Deputy Manager Tang Dingxian of Sichuan Minshan Group Co., Ltd, CEO Wang Shuo of Research Center of World Tourism Economy, Deputy Director Zhong Sicheng of the Industrial Development Department of China Chamber of Tourism, and entrepreneur representatives Liu Zhuoxin and Li Li, to attend the summit. Vice President He Chaoqiong made a speech at the theme section of “Building a Patter-Tourism Future”.

The summit had extended discussions by surrounding subjects such as “Global Agenda of Sustainable Development”, “Force of Common Reform-Cooperation”, “Building a Patter-Tourism Future”, “Viewing China from a Long Term”, “Free Tourism-Could ASEAN Countries Win”, and “Digital Field-Balanced Tourism Safety-Tourism Facility”. Among all subjects, “China” was the most brilliant and most attractive “key word”. According to the statistics, in 2016, the amount of Chinese domestic tourism totaled 4.44 billion persons while the inbound and outbound tourism totaled 260 million, achieving overall tourism revenue for the whole year of RMB 4.69 trillion. Among them, the outbound tourism of Chinese people amounted to 122 million with an overall outbound tourism expenditure of USD 109.8 million. It was no doubt that the tourism and shopping passionate of Chinese tourists would be strongly attractive for tourism destinations.

President and CEO David Kerswell of WTTC said in his speech at the opening ceremony that, the registered tourism industry in Thailand had developed rapidly in the past year and its importance, investment return, and future sustainable development lay at the government drive. It would be the national tourism development plan via its sustainable planning to ensure its natural and cultural assets.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said in his speech that, as one of the world tourist destination, Thailand had created miracle experience via its unique life style, history and culture, and diversified tourism resources for tourists from all over the world, and at the same time, it had greatly strengthened the competitiveness of its tourism industry in the international arena, which had and would bring profitable return to the economic development of Thailand. In 2016, the amount of inbound tourists in Thailand surpassed the settled goal, and the comprehensive income reached USD 71 billion, an increase of 11% year on year compared with that of 2015. This fully proves that Thailand tourism industry has made great contributions to the development of world tourism economy. Secretary-general Taleb Rifai of the United Nations World Tourism Organization said in his speech that, tourism industry was one of the industries that created most jobs in the world, accounting for 10.2% of the global GDP. To develop tourism could alleviate poverty and drive the economic growth, but also promote the world peace, and thus help to realize the sustainable development goal in 2030 set by UN. Former British Prime Minister Cameron delivered a speech at the section of “Has Globalization Era Come?” to share a lot of problems, involving the challenge, willingness and forced migration faced by global diplomacy after the power right basis transferring to new emerging economies, as well as the role of government and enterprises, and the opinions.

Executive President Wang Min’gang of China Chamber of Tourism said in an interview that, 65 countries along the “Belt and Road” had extensive connections with China in history and they had commons and basis of connectivity in terms of culture and development idea. Parts of these countries have been important cultural original places and junction since ancient time. They owned profound historical culture foundation, rich cultural and natural landscapes in the distribution of resources while owning obvious advantages in connectivity in terms of geography. All these elements had already laid the foundation of the prosperous development of tourism industry in these countries to a large extent. Along with the continuous promotion of the “Belt and Road” Initiative, tourism resources of these countries would definitely be re-positioned and re-motivated. He firmly believed that in the near future, tourism industry of countries along the “Belt and Road” would expect new growth and development, which was highly consistent with the sustainable development goal of UNWTO tourism industry. Moreover, by strengthening the mutual cooperation of tourism industry, it would drive the cooperation and development of these countries in terms of economy, trade, infrastructure construction, and investment, which would make “Belt & Road” truly become a morale project of improving the comprehensive development and people's living standard in these countries.

Vice President He Chaoqiong expressed in his speech that, the rising of emerging traveler market in China and other Asian countries was right the great power to promote the transformation of world tourism industry. Young travelers in China and other Asian countries had surpassed 100 million. They expected to experience the overseas culture knowing from social platforms and internet by going aboard. At present, these travelers have already displayed their unique style and demands. Only intensifying the service level of tourism industry and breaking through habitual ways of thinking, could win-win situation be formed.

At the summit, Chairman Li Xiaomei of the Board of Mekong River Tourism Co., Ltd introduced the scheme of theme exchange activities held in Puer during the period of UNWTO Chengdu Conference in 2017 to WTTC officials and guests. She wished to combine this activity with “Sustainable Tourism Development International Year 2017” of UNWTO to integrate themes such as biodiversity and tourism sustainable development so as to create “Puer Mode” and “Puer Experience” in terms of tourism and green sustainable development and boost Puer’s tourism to go globally.

At this summit, the business delegation of China Chamber of Tourism obtained extensive attention and had wide and in-depth communication with industrial representatives from the world. Supervisor Zaka Majal of the China and Australia Region of Royal Jordanian Airlines, Industrial Strategy Executive Director Manal Diab of Middle East Shipping Organization, Chairman Dr. Michael Frenzel of Germany Association of Tourism and Industry, representatives of Japan Travel & Tourism Council and Air France gave credit for the work achievement of China Chamber of Tourism and established connection with the chamber to expect deep cooperation in the future.

On April 27th, ceremony of “Tomorrow Tourism Industry” Award was held. Institutions, organizations and individuals from 15 countries of the world obtained the honor. Among them, Marriott Foundation Chinese Tourism & Education Cooperation project— Wanli Haocheng obtained the Medal of Arts. Member of China Chamber of Tourism, the Mekong River Tourism Co., Ltd, had made great efforts for many years in terms of biodiversity protection and the harmony between man and nature. Yu’nan Mekong River Co., Ltd, affiliated to Mekong River Tourism Co., Ltd, has become a model scenic spot in this field and it is now actively preparing to obtain relevant Tomorrow Tourism Industry” awards in 2018.

At the closing ceremony of the summit, the then Executive Secretary-general Mr. Roberto Palais of Argentina Inprotur announced that the WTTC Annual Summit 2018 would be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and it would be co-held by Argentina Inprotur, Argentinean Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism Bureau of Buenos Aires, which would have also been the first time of the summit to be held in South America since 2009. As a world well-known tourism destination, Argentina’s tourism revenue in 2016 accounted for 9.6% of its whole GDP and it expects to have a growth of 4.4% in 2017. Besides, tourism industry provides 1.6 million jobs, accounting for 6.6%. We are looking forward to explore the advanced experience and positive effect of Argentina government in promoting business and leisure tourism in the WTTC 2018 Summit.
